SIFT Method (adapted from The University of Chicago)
- S - Stop: Before reading or sharing an article, pause. Ask yourself if you trust the source. Most importantly, check your emotions—outrage or surprise can cause you to share unverified claims.
- I - Investigate the source: Find out who is providing the information before you read it. Look up the author or publisher on Google or Wikipedia to gauge their reputation, credentials, or potential biases.
- F - Find better coverage: Check to see if other trusted, reliable news organizations or fact-checking websites are reporting the same story. Look for a general consensus on the topic.
- T - Trace claims, quotes, and media: Original context matters. Follow the links in an article back to the original studies, quotes, or reports to ensure the information hasn't been cherry-picked or taken out of context.

Vestavia Hills High School recognizes generative AI as an important and evolving tool in today's world. When deemed appropriate and used responsibly, it can be a valuable resource to enhance creativity and elevate student learning, but there are many ethical concerns that should be contemplated before using AI.
You must have your teacher's permission to use AI as a tool, and you must fully disclose how you used it and the prompt that you used. You may be asked to cite AI use either formally or informally.
You may be asked to provide drafts of your work to see the progression and evolution of your work. How AI is handled may vary greatly by department and individual teacher, so it's your responsibility to know what you can and cannot do with regard to AI. When it doubt, consult your teacher about how you plan to use generative AI in your assignments.

Students can access additional digital resources through Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest website. This includes e-books and downloadable audiobooks through Overdrive and Hoopla, movies and documentaries through Hoopla and Kanopy, research through AVL and the Library's databases, and online instruction through Universal Class.
This requires the use of a Library card. If you do not have a current Library card, read these guidelines on their website. You can apply at the LIF, but you need a parent to go with you.
