Honors Societies

VHHS is home to several honor societies that all have unique requirements, fees, and induction ceremonies. Requirements are subject to change each year.

  • Sponsor:  Carole Murray

    Requirements:  

    • Minimum of 3 semester A’s and 1 semester B for ASL I and II.
    • Minimum 3.0 for all other classes
    • Must be enrolled in ASL III
    • No discipline infractions (Class II or above)

    Induction: 1st semester of ASL III

    Fee: $20 one time fee. 5 service hours for the cord, 10 service hours for the Laurent Clerc medal. One time fee covers the cost of these.

    Requirements: Choral Honor Society Qualification

    Induction: No induction

    Fee: $15

    Requirements:  

    • Minimum of 3 semesters As and 1 semester B for French I and II; 
    • Must be enrolled in French III;
    • Service hours/points are required each year to maintain membership.
    • No discipline infractions (Class II or above)

    Induction: Ceremony fall semester during French III

    Fees: $25 one-time fee

    Requirements: 

    • Minimum of 3 semesters As and 1 semester B for German I and II; 
    • Must be enrolled in German III;
    • 6 service hours/points required each year to maintain membership
    • No discipline infractions (Class II or above)

    Induction: Ceremony fall semester during German III

    Fees: $25 one-time fee

    Requirements:  10 points earned through being in shows, working backstage on plays, seeing plays, and competing. 

    Induction: This event occurs in May. It is dependent on the student filling out the form with their points and experience. The sponsor and president of the society determine point values for each event. Junior Thespians can have their induction transferred to the high school.

    Requirements: 

    • Minimum of 3 semesters As and 1 semester B for Latin I and II; 
    • Must be enrolled in Latin III
    • No discipline infractions (Class II or above)

    Induction: 1st Semester of Latin III

    Fee:  $30 one time fee required to join JCL (Latin Club) in order to be a member of the Latin Honor Society. This is the official organization not a VHHS fee.

  • Mu Alpha Theta is the national high school mathematics honor society. You must have completed Honors /Accelerated Geometry and Honors/Accelerated Algebra II and be currently enrolled in Honors/Accelerated Precalculus, Honors Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB/BC, or AP Computer Science Principles.  Dual Enrollment Precalculus is not considered an honors-level class.  All math classes, other than Algebra I, must be Honors- or Accelerated-level classes. To be eligible for membership, you must have 85 or higher in each semester of your math classes and a 3.0 GPA overall.  You will be notified via your current math teacher to apply for acceptance and will receive an email from one of the sponsors if you have been accepted. Once accepted into the honors society, students must pay a one time $20 fee to maintain their membership. This fee covers their national dues and honor cord. In addition, they have the opportunity to purchase a Mu Alpha Theta T-shirt. This shirt typically costs around $18. If the Mu Alpha Theta National Office changes any costs, our costs will reflect this.

    Requirements:

    • Complete a minimum of three or more visual art credits by the end of the senior year
    • Earn and maintain a 4.0 in the visual arts classes
    • Earn and maintain a 2.5 overall GPA
    • Service hours/points are required each year to maintain membership

    Induction: Early Fall of Senior year; in class notification (no ceremony)

    Fee:  $20 (includes national dues and Honor cord)

  • Sponsors:  Celia Dozier and Rachel Dodson

    Requirements: 

    • 3.75 GPA
    • Strong character
    • Leadership
    • Community service ( 10 hours in the summer, 6 in the fall, and 6 in the spring)

    Induction: Spring Semester 

    Fees: $30.00 new member fee, reduced fee of $25 for seniors

  • Sponsor: Pam Hickman 

    Requirements: 

    • Must be in 10th grade or higher to apply 
    • Minimum 3.0 unweighted overall GPA  
    • Minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA in CTE courses 
    • No Honor Code violations and no Class III or Class IV offenses 
    • Complete 1 full-year CTE Introduction course (2 semesters) 
    • Minimum 1 semester of a 2nd or 3rd-level CTE course 
    • You may only count 1 intro CTE course towards the National Technical Honor Society 
    • Applications will be posted the week after Thanksgiving. Please listen for announcements.  

    Fee: $45.00 (Includes national membership dues and Honor Cord)

    Requirements: 30 points within the dance department at VHHS

    Induction: Annual End of School Year Showcase

    Fee: $25 one-time fee

  • Sponsors:  Amy Maddox, Zach Morgan, Brad Toland, and Michelle Seale

    Requirements:  

    • 4.0 overall GPA
    • Completion of 6 semesters Honors/AP level or 4 semesters of AP level Social Studies classes
    • Minimum B average in AP Social Studies classes
    • Minimum A average in Honors Social Studies classes
    • Enrollment in at least one AP level Social Studies class in Senior year
    • Completed Rho Kappa application
    • No discipline infractions or Honor Code violations

    Induction: early Fall of Senior year; in class notification (no ceremony)

    Fee:  $30 (national dues, t-shirt, honor cord)

  • Sponsors:  Angie Richardson, Brittany Crawley

    Requirements:  

    • 4.00 overall GPA
    • 4.00 science GPA 
    • Completion of 6 semesters Honor or AP level Science classes
    • Enrollment in at least one Honors Science or AP level Science class in Senior year
    • Completed SNHS application
    • No discipline infractions or Honor Code violations

    Induction:  Fall Semester Senior year

    Fees: $35 (national dues, t-shirt, honor cord)

    Requirements:  

    • Minimum of 3 semesters As and 1 semester B for Spanish I and II; 
    • Must be enrolled in Honors Spanish III or above.
    • Service hours/ points are required each year to maintain membership
    • No discipline infractions (Class II or above)

    Induction: Ceremony fall semester during Spanish III

    Fees: $25 one-time fee

  • Sponsors:  Nate Conoly

    Requirements: Join the team and compete in two Speech and Debate tournaments

    Induction: in class (no ceremony)

    Fees: $220 dues to join the team but that also goes towards tournament fees for the year

  • Sponsors:  Taylor Stricklin, Heather Palmer

    Requirements: Students must participate in the club for two years to be eligible for Music Honor Society.  Students will be expected to maintain points in order to be eligible for Tri-M.

    Induction: no ceremony
