Honors Societies

National Affiliation: American Sign Language Honor Society, https://aslta.org/aslhs/

The ASLHS recognizes students who continue to ASL 3 with a strong GPA (excellence), appropriate behavior (respect) and have completed service hours that benefit the Deaf community (service). 5-9 service hours qualify a student for the Alice Cogswell Medal, 10+ service hours qualify a student for the Laurent Clerc Medal. The majority of service hours must be directly serving or serving with members of the local Deaf community.  VHHS students have served in many neat ways. Some examples are:  as volunteers at sporting events at the Alabama School for the Deaf, as helpers for deaf and hard of hearing kindergarten classes on field trips, as aides at week long summer camp for Deaf students, and working with a team of Deaf and hard of hearing people who are building a Habitat for Humanity House. 

Students must be in level 3 of ASL and have no level 2 or higher behavior infractions(VHHS rules). Students must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA and a 3.2 or higher ASL GPA. Students do not officially apply. My ASL 3 students indicate wanting to qualify for ASLHS by completing service hours.

The Choral Honor Society exists to celebrate and advocate for choral music in our school and community. 

Applications are released in early October. Students must hit 15 "points" from a list of qualifying experiences/activities/opportunities. Contact Mr. Stricklin with questions.

National Affiliation: International Thespian Society 

International Thespian Society is an Honor Society for Theatre students. 

Students must earn 10 points for induction and each year afterward. They have monthly meetings, charity work, and support theatre initiatives.

National Affiliation: Mu Alpha Theta

Mu Alpha Theta is a Math honor society at VHHS.

National Affiliation: National Art Honor Society (National Art Education Association)

For more than 40 years, National Art Honor Society programs have recognized outstanding visual arts students and their teachers. The program supports members in achieving the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service while providing opportunities for leadership, peer recognition, college and career preparation, community engagement, and more—helping to promote the value of art education within schools and communities.

Applications are sent out to students in the Spring who meet GPA criteria and who have no major disciplinary infractions. Additionally, students who complete the application receive faculty feedback. Following, membership is extended and the induction is held between March and April.

National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) recognizes students for their excellence, achievement, and commitment in career and technical education. NTHS members demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership, character, responsibility, and dedication to their chosen career pathway. Through service, leadership opportunities, and recognition of technical skills and accomplishments, NTHS encourages students to develop the skills and work ethic needed for success in college, careers, and their communities.

The minimum requirements for acceptance to Rho Kappa include a 4.0 overall GPA; a 4.0 average in all social studies classes; completion of 4 semesters of Honors or AP level social studies classes; current enrollment in an Honors or AP level social studies class.   

Students must have a minimum of two adult sponsors to certify the student has met the criteria of scholarship, leadership, service and citizenship. One sponsor must be from a social studies teacher. The other may be from a teacher, school administrator, or activity or community service sponsor.

Students must provide a statement of interest: Provide a brief description of your interest in the social studies. Which areas interest you the most? Why? What do you hope to gain from membership of Rho Kappa? What do you plan to contribute?  

Parents of Applicants must complete the  Statement of Understanding:  I have read the information provided by my son/daughter on this application and can verify that it is true, accurate, and complete.   I understand that completion of this application does not guarantee selection to VHHS Rho Kappa and that student membership in Rho Kappa will require a continued commitment to scholarship and service in the social studies. National Affiliation: National Speech and Debate Association

The National Speech & Debate Association connects, supports, and inspires a diverse community committed to empowering students through speech and debate. They envision a world in which every school provides speech and debate programs to foster each student’s communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creative skills.

The National Speech & Debate Association’s Honor Society (also known as the National Forensic League) recognizes high school students and coaches for participation in speech and debate activities. Students earn merit points for participation in one of the oldest and most respected honor societies known to college admissions offices. Members of the Honor Society are held to the Code of Honor, the highest standards of humility, equity, integrity, respect, leadership, and service. Character, personal accountability, and social responsibility have been valued by the organization since the founding in 1925. The Code of Honor reflects the core values of and standards for participation within the organization. Over the past 100 years, they’ve celebrated the honorable actions and achievements of nearly two million alumni.

Students must first be a member of the VHSHS Speech and Debate Team. There is an application process to join the team and can be found here:

If accepted, you will join the team and class period to prepare for tournaments. Points will be earned in various ways at Speech and Debate competitions. To be recognized at VHHS for this Honor Society, a minimum of 75 points must be earned by the student during the school year.
