Update on Incident at Board of Education Building

Posted Date: 12/19/24 (12:26 PM)

The following is a joint statement from Vestavia Hills City Schools and the Vestavia Hills Police Department.

Detectives with the Vestavia Hills Police Department have obtained a felony warrant on Kyle Anthony Kozak DOB 02/21/1990 from the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for Shooting into an Unoccupied Building. This is a Class C felony and bond is set at $30,000.

During the investigation, detectives determined that on 12/15/2024 at approximately 11:50 p.m., a round was fired from a vehicle traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 31 that struck a window at the Vestavia Hills City Schools Board of Education building. There were no BOE personnel in the building at the time of the incident. VHPD detectives worked tirelessly to process evidence and track down leads in this case. Their hard work and dedication resulted in the identification and arrest of Mr. Kozak as the suspect in the case.

Vestavia Hills City Schools would like to express its gratitude to the Vestavia Hills Police Department for their thorough investigation that led to this arrest. This outcome demonstrates the effectiveness of our longstanding partnership with VHPD in ensuring the safety of our students and staff.

We want to reassure our families and staff that Vestavia Hills Police believe this to be an isolated incident and that there are no known threats to our schools, students or staff.

Throughout this incident, we maintained our standard security protocols, including the presence of School Resource Officers at all campuses. We are able to provide this level of security every day of the school year thanks to our partnership with the City of Vestavia Hills and their unwavering commitment to school safety.
